Ear surgery can improve the shape, position or proportion of the ear.* It can correct a defect in the ear structure that is present at birth or due to trauma.* The procedure creates a natural shape bringing proportion and balance to the ears and face.*
Otoplasty is a surgical procedure that can reduce the size of large ears back closer to the head. An incision is made in the back of the ear. The cartilage of the ear is bent or removed and secured into a position closer to the head. It is often performed on children once the ears have reached their full size, which are around 5 or 6 years of age. For young children, the outcome of the procedure is profound and can make a difference in their confidence and self-esteem.* The procedure can be performed on both children and adults.
You may be under local anesthesia or general anesthesia. Following the procedure, patients will be placed in the recovery room. A sterile dressing is applied to protect the ears. You may experience some discomfort. For the first few nights, patients are required to sleep with their head elevated. Patients can wash their hair by the third day after surgery.
*Results and patient experience may vary.
